At the Association's General Membership Meeting held on July 31, 2010 our Treasurer, Bruce Moore reported that our general operating expenses were exceeding dues income and general donations; and that if this trend continues we would be unable to provide our current level of services within a few years. The Board of Directors met after the General Meeting to discuss ways to reduce or cut expenses where possible and to determine if a restructure of our Memberships and related Dues were in order.
As you know, the Association has not changed or increased its dues since 2000 in spite of the rising cost of operating expenses like postage and printing. We felt the nominal increase was both overdue and well justified.
After much discussion the Board approved a restructure of Memberships and related Dues as following:
Regular Membership with a annual dues of $25.00
Regular 5 Year Membership with a 5 Year dues of $115.00
Purple Heart Membership: Annual Membership with a dues of $10.00
5 Year Membership with a dues of $40.00
Note - This Membership has not changed and is only being offered to active-duty Purple Heart Recipients.
Members with an email address must then decide if they want solely a Company Roster or Era that they served in 506th, or a Roster of all Eras of the Regiment. Members without an email address will no longer receive a Roster of all Eras of the Regiment but will received solely a Company Roster or Era that they served in the 506th.
This change to Membership and Dues will be effective as of November 1, 2010 any new or renewal Association Dues received on or after this date will be counted as prepaid dues for 2011.

506th PIR Trooper to be Honored
A new memorial will be dedicated in honor of Lt. Gunther D Company 506th PIR in his hometown of Malden, Massachusetts this coming June 6, 2010. It is in a beautiful spot, overlooking the water, visited by many residents, and in the neighborhood where he grew up.
Lt. Gunther jumped into Normandy in stick 61, landed in a tree in the churchyard of St. Mere de Eglise, and was killed by German machine gun fire. Lt. Gunther is buried at The American Cemetery @ Colleville sur Mer in Normandy.

Filthy 13 Member Dies
John "Jack" Agnew, a member of the Demolitions Platoon Regemental HQ 506th PIR died on April 8, 2010. Jack was a member of the group refered to as the Filthy 13, the group that inspired the movie "The Dirty Dozen". Jack, died in suburban Philadelphia, he was 88 years old.

Currahee Passing
It is with sadness that we report the passing of SGT James Archie Warren, C Co 1-506th, 2004-2006. He died on Thursday, April 8, 2010 at his parents home in Lawrenceville Ga. His viewing was on Sunday April 11, 2010 between 6pm and 8pm EST, at the Crowell Brothers Funeral Home in Norcross, GA. Graveside Service were at the Georgia National Military Cemetery, Canton, GA on Monday April 12, 2010 at 11am EST. Our prayers are with his family and fellow soldiers, especially SFC Campbell, we stand alone, together.

Currahee Passing
It is with great sadness that I inform all of you of the recent passing of former 506th Airborne Infantry Regiment Association President Brise Bickerton on January 30, 2010 while hospitalized near his home in PA.
To his wife Marjorie and his entire family the entire 506th Airborne Infantry Regiment Association officers, board of directors and membership send our sincere condolences.
Brise’s dedication to his family and to his fellow veterans and active duty soldiers was a model for all of us to emulate. His caring was something to be respected and he will be sorely missed. A “Currahee” was called to take charge and we know that his spirit will continue to get the job done. Brise, thank you for entering so many lives!

Black Receives Awards 40 years Late
Here's a good story about the Currahee spirit, 40 years later. Currahee Roger Black earned a few awards back in June 1970 while serving with the 506th Infantry. He finally received them on November 13, 2009 courtesy of U.S. Rep. Chet Edwards and then Sgt. Gib Rossetter.

Veterans Day
As Veterans Day November 11, 2009 comes around let us all remember those soldiers, families and friends that paid the ultimate sacrifice for us. Let us also not forget the current troops who serve far and near and put their lives on the line for every single one of us.
Today during one of my volunteering efforts a mom mentioned to me that her son a senior in high school has already signed his paperwork to join the Army upon graduation. She also went on to state that this will now mean her family has 3 sons serving in the military at different installations around the world.
I told her to thank her son’s for their service from a veteran.
If you see a soldier in uniform, tell them “THANK YOU”. If you come across another veteran thank them for their service!
Veterans enjoy your special day and thank you all for your service!!!!!

"Currahee" KIA Memorial to be dedicated in November
The highly-anticipated memorial to our fallen comrades is fast becoming a reality. The 506th Airborne Infantry Regiment will hold a formal dedication for the new memorial to soldiers of the regiment killed in action in four wars. Once again, the Currahees have delivered on a commitment.
According to LTC David Womack, commanding officer of the 1st Battalion of the Regiment, "The memorial has come to symbolize the strong bonds that unite the Currahees across generations and wars." He said, "Those bonds - founded in pride, commitment and shared experience - explain the esprit de corps that is legendary in the 506th, and which is demonstrated in the success of this project."
The dedication ceremony will take place on November 12, 2009 - the day after Veteran's Day -- in the 506th regimental area at Fort Campbell, KY. The schedule of events around the dedication should be announced by the regiment shortly.

Jack Foley Easy Company
Jack Foley passed away on September 14, 2009.
We regret to inform all that one of our brothers died at the age of 87. Jack Foley passed away on Monday evening. His health was fragile but he was tough.
Jack was platoon leader of the 1st platoon during World War II. His brothers said he was a great officer and a great man. The members of the 506th Association will always remember him as a good and honest man. Currahee!

Return to Vietnam, Revives Memories
The September issue of V.F.W. Magazine has a story titled "Return to Vietnam, Revives Memories." The story tells the story of a group of Vietnam Veterans who returned to places like Phu Bai. Yes gentlemen, Phu Bai is alright! One of the veterans returning to Vietnam was Robert Greene, VFW Assistant Quartermaster General. Currahee Killed in Auto Accident
Former SPC Matthew Zygmunt, who served with C Co 2nd PLT 1-506th from 2005-2008, was killed August 3, 2009 in a car crash in Lebanon Ky. The funeral announcements will be made soon. All we know currently know is that the funeral will be held in Wisconsin sometime this week. Our military is one of the finest group of men and women in the world and each and every day those men and women support and protect our freedom to speak, shoot, hunt and fish. These men like also like to take time out of their busy schedules and enjoy the pleasure of getting outdoors and hunting with friends and family. Our military is certainly not the best paid men and women and I know most all of them are not serving our country for the money, that is for sure.
After getting this great letter from Maj, MS Darin L Harper(US Army), I am proposing that we reward our military with resident licenses in all 50 states. Each state controls their resident and non-resident costs for licenses and every state has the option to declare military members as exceptions to the rule. In fact I am pretty sure that most level headed politicians and game and fish officers would stand right beside me in saying we need to support our US Troops both at home and abroad.
Lets work together to give our United States soldiers the right to buy resident tags and licenses for hunting in every state of our great country so they can enjoy the outdoors no matter where they are stationed.

Mr. Paulson -
My name is MAJ Darin Harper, I am an active duty officer in the US Army, and am currently a student at the Command and General Staff College in Ft. Leavenworth KS. I have served in uniform since 1987 when I enlisted after High School graduation and have served in a variety of assignments all over the world. In the course of my profession I have been assigned to seven different locations in the continental United States as well as four overseas assignments including a tour in Iraq and Afghanistan. I am an avid outdoorsman and enjoy hunting and fishing whenever I can. As a service member I get the opportunity to apply for a resident license in whichever state I am currently assigned. I am extremely appreciative of this benefit as the cost of seven different out of state licenses over the past 16 years would be pretty expensive! However, because my profession often sends me to locations that are not of my choosing, if I want to hunt with family or friends in other states (even ones I had lived in before) I loose my resident status. For most hunters, the additional cost of hunting out of state is just a part of the game, if you don’t want to pay…don’t play. Over the past four years I have been deployed twice and have found it challenging and expensive (when I am home) to attend a family quail hunt over Thanksgiving in Oklahoma, summer fishing trips with other family members in Colorado, and Spring turkey hunting with friends I just left in Kentucky.
The operational tempo of the US military, over the past eight years, has forced many of us to change assignments and locations at a rate higher than ever before. I think that states should allow active duty servicemen to apply for resident licenses regardless of their current location. The states themselves would benefit from this as their total number of sold licenses would increase among service members as opposed to them not buying one at all because of the high out of state costs. I think it would also increase the total number of sportsmen in the military if the costs and availability of licensing was reasonable.The views expressed are my own and are not the official policy or position of the Department of the Army, Department of Defense, or the U.S. Government.

Well Darin, I agree with you 100% and I think that if you are out there working to protect my freedom to hunt, fish and shoot and raise my family, then you should absolutely be allowed to hunt and fish in every state of our great country and with your military ID you should be able to buy a license and tags just like a resident. We need to support our troops and we should help them to enjoy our great outdoors they work so hard to protect......

When service members are on leave, the leave form (DA31) should be considered a valid license in any state the service member chooses to hunt or fish in.

In my personal opinion, you should not have to be a resident to hunt anywhere. Each state should have a resident or non-resident (vacationer) license or else there should be a national fishing/hunting license that covers the entire continental US with each state getting a percentage of the fee.

100% agreement here. Our service men and women give up their time, risk thier lives, move around as required. . . all to protect the freedoms we enjoy. Definitely, even if they are passing through a state, they should be considered residents. They serve this country, and that means all 50 states.
Call me crazy, but I think if servicemen are on active duty, they should not be charged for the license or at least get a dramatic discount.

Vietnam Veterans Welcome Home Ceremony
Fort Campbell, Kentucky 1400H 16 August 2009
MG Jeffrey J Schloesser, CG 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) has announced a Welcome Home Ceremony for Vietnam Veterans during the Week of the Eagle at Fort Campbell Kentucky on Sunday 16 August 2009.
Vietnam Veterans from ALL units, branches and services are invited to participate in this very special opportunity. Vietnam Veterans will have the rare privilege of receiving the same welcome home that every member of the 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) receives when they return from the war on terrorism.
To participate, everyone is to enter Fort Campbell, KY at Gate 7 on Sunday 16 August 2009 and assemble in casual patriotic attire no later than 1400H CST (2:00 PM) at the Freedom Fighter Gymnasium near the 4th BCT (506th Currahee) headquarters.
Buses at the Freedom Fighter Gymnasium will transport everyone to and from Hangar 3. At Hangar 3, family and friends will assemble inside while the Vietnam Veterans form and "dress right dress" outside the hangar.
The grand moment will be when the hangar doors open to the sound of patriotic music, banners, cheers and tears. The Vietnam Veterans will be greeted by our new Commanding General, MG John F Campbell (former Commander 1st Bde 82nd Abn Div), families, friends and other patriots. What a memorable moment! I am a veteran of the Vietnam War and it touches me deeply to know that our Commanding General has made this special effort to include the Vietnam Veteran in the same honors given to our active duty Soldiers.
After the Hangar 3 ceremony, buses will return everyone to the Freedom Fighter Gymnasium (air-conditioned) and a sit down free Bar-B-Q meal for the Vietnam Veteran and one guest. The Golden Rule Smokehouse Restaurant is donating the meals.

MG Jeffrey J Schloesser, CG 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) has announced a Welcome Home Ceremony for Vietnam Veterans during the Week of the Eagle at Fort Campbell Kentucky on Sunday 16 August 2009.
Vietnam Veterans from ALL units, branches and services are invited to participate in this very special opportunity. Vietnam Veterans will have the rare privilege of receiving the same welcome home that every member of the 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) receives when they return from the war on terrorism.
To participate, everyone is to enter Fort Campbell, KY at Gate 7 on Sunday 16 August 2009 and assemble in casual patriotic attire no later than 1400H CST (2:00 PM) at the Freedom Fighter Gymnasium near the 4th BCT (506th Currahee) headquarters.
Buses at the Freedom Fighter Gymnasium will transport everyone to and from Hangar 3. At Hangar 3, family and friends will assemble inside while the Vietnam Veterans form and "dress right dress" outside the hangar.
The grand moment will be when the hangar doors open to the sound of patriotic music, banners, cheers and tears. The Vietnam Veterans will be greeted by our new Commanding General, MG John F Campbell (former Commander 1st Bde 82nd Abn Div), families, friends and other patriots. What a memorable moment! I am a veteran of the Vietnam War and it touches me deeply to know that our Commanding General has made this special effort to include the Vietnam Veteran in the same honors given to our active duty Soldiers.
After the Hangar 3 ceremony, buses will return everyone to the Freedom Fighter Gymnasium (air-conditioned) and a sit down free Bar-B-Q meal for the Vietnam Veteran and one guest. The Golden Rule Smokehouse Restaurant is donating the meals.

Currahee KIA Memorial
The 4th BCT, Currahee, is in the process of building a memorial to all Currahees killed in all wars since World War II. COL Pete Johnson gave veteran Currahees a presentation on the project during Currahee Rendezvous 2009. During the reunion 4 Currahees were awarded Silver Stars in front of the area where ground has been broken for the memorial. Although the foundation work for this memorial has been completed, the Currahees need help to complete this task. For more information visit the Special Projects page.
